Where the Fundraising money is going

The money raised from the fundraisers (about 25k so far) will be used 100% in Cambodia for:

1. 50%will go to expansion to more families. (It costs CfC about $2,000 for each family we bring on (conservatively) because we need to pay local staff, office costs, buy materials, and pay them for their labour for up to 6 months before we can sell what they have made.) This together with a grant for $10,320 from UNESCO means that we will be expanding to at least 11 families this year but we are trying to stretch that to 20 families.

2. 50% for Development Activities.

- $3,000 has already been allocated to a no interest micro finance fund that we will use to help relieve them of debts, and provide no interest loans against their work so that they can resist things like health and financial shocks. -The first project from this fund is being taken on by the longest standing producers – who want to build a cotton and rug storage shed in their village so that they can have constant local access to new cotton, save money on transport and work as fast as they want to. They are contributing labour and CfC is loaning them 50% and paying for 50% itself. This will cost about $1,200USD in total.

- $1,000 has also been set aside as a staff discretionary fund to give the local staff the ability to decide on how some funds should be spent to help the families.

- The rest of the development activities are paying the new Cambodian social worker that we are about to hire with the funds (without the social worker we can’t do any of the development activities) to work with Clay to run a participatory process with the participants to figure out what their needs are and what they think is the best things to do (that fit in with our development philosophy of empowerment).

CfC’s New Blog – Clay has landed in Cambodia

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to our new blog! It’s up and running before the new website is ready to go lived but that won’t stop us!

We’ll b using this to update on interesting things going on at CfC and what’s happening on the ground in Cambodia.

So what is going on in Cambodia?

Clay has landed Phnom Penh and will be working for CfC as an Australia Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD) for the next 12 months.

He’ll be working in Siem Reap as the Program Development Officer. His job is to work together with a new Social Worker to implement programs that will benefit our participants. He’ll also be looking at improving production processes, training staff, implementing a strong Measurement and Evaluation  system and helping us get more funding.

Clay has Hours (1st class) in Development and did his thesis on governance in Cambodia. He has also studied project management and done and lot of teaching end training people around the world.

We’ve been waiting for about 3 years to get someone on the ground over there so it’s great to have finally achieved that.

He’ll be blogging here regularly and bringing us stories, pictures and videos from the ground so stay tuned to hear about how it all goes.

In general Camboida news the first conviction hase been handed down in the Khmer rouge trials to ‘Duch’ the infamous director of Toul Sleng prison.  http://www.krtrial.org/showarticle.php?language=english&action=shownews&art_id=4285&needback=1. I’ve heard people saying that the sentence is too short and I’ve also read that he will appeal.

Stay tunned for more soon from Clay on the ground in Cambodia.

Cheers,

Dave
